Vertical Farming: An Innovative Solution for Urban and Landless Farming

Modern-day agricultural practices are principal contributors of pollution, contamination of the food system, loss of diversity, disruption of natural ecosystems, ecological pattern shifting, niche destruction, pollution of land, air, and water, and resistance of insect pests and weeds to agro-chemicals, as well as innumerable complications that are even harder to apprehend. Vertical farming deals with the growth of crops in vertical layers in indoor (using artificial and sunlight) soilless mediums using controlled environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, day length, photoperiods, etc.) and controlled application methods of crop inputs at the doorstep of consumers. Vertical farming saves time and fuel by devising methods of crop production in soilless culture. Timely sowing of crops can be accomplished without consuming large amounts of fuels by adopting soilless mediums. Plants that have leafy green vegetables with a fast growth rate, photoperiod insensitivity, that are able to adapt to shady and sunlit conditions with fibrous root systems, and for which there is a high demand on the market, are easy choices for vertical farming. Crop responses are detected using sensors, information is collected as digital data and sent to processors. Processors have specialized software for processing data and make decisions that are digitally fed to crop applicators. Crop applicators precisely apply inputs (water and nutrients) as periodic responses to signals received from processors. The vertical farming approach increases the productivity of crops per unit of land area and per unit of input applied. Pollution, environmental sustainability, and food security-related problems caused by conventional systems of farming can be resolved, together with meeting the demand for food of modern societies.
