High Myopia Requires “High Attention”

  • Jia Qu

摘要

High myopia is defined as nearsightedness of −6 diopter or higher, or axis length is longer than 26.5 mm. High myopia is generally classified into two categories: simple high myopia, which is characterized by higher diopter but stabilizes in adulthood, with normal or near-normal corrected visual acuity and little ocular damage; the other category is prone to pathological myopia—myopia diopter growing even after adulthood and is associated with a range of fundus complications, such as posterior scleral staphyloma, fundus haemorrhage and macular degeneration, leading to varying degrees of visual impairment, even blindness. Some young people with high myopia may reduce myopia diopter or eliminate myopia through corneal myopia surgery, but not the root cause of the underlying fundus pathology—merely curing the symptom, not the disease. This group of people should be more vigilant and take precautions to reduce the risk of further severe complications.
