Energy and Exergy Analysis of Photovoltaic Systems with Self-cleaning Coatings: A Case Study in a Semi-arid Climate

This analysis is based on the evaluation and analysis of the performances of five solar photovoltaic systems using energy and exergy analysis across different months during the testing period in Ben Guerir, situated in Morocco's semi-arid climate. The analysis also compared efficiency between mechanical cleaning of solar surfaces and an innovation in automatic cleaning, using self-cleaning solutions and hydrophobic coatings. The SWP system demonstrated maximum efficiency with 15.02% in terms of energy and 14.53% in terms of exergy, followed by the IGP system with 14.94% and 14.43% respectively. Similarly, the DSD system was 14.81% efficient in sense of energy and 14.48% in sense of exergy. The reference system (UN) experienced an increase in energy conversion due to typical winter rainfall events during the test period. For all three systems, there was a slight difference between exergy and energy, since for the water-cleaned system (UN) and the reference system, the difference was 2% and 3% respectively. According to the exergy analysis, it is clear that coatings and self-cleaning solutions can reduce efficiency losses, whether electrical or thermal. This underlines the importance of evaluating systems from an exergy point of view.
