Resistance to Americanization and Globalization in Salman Rushdie’s Fury

Americanization and globalization have drawn the attention of contemporary novelists considerably. Salman Rushdie deals with the issues related to the bad effects of the hegemonic ideologies in his novel Fury (2001). America has been the dream of destination of people of the third world countries to fulfill their ambition. However, they have to face a lot of difficulties in the context of their ethnicity and identity. In the novel, Rushdie shows how a group of migrants in America are seriously disappointed due to imposition of hegemonic American culture on them affecting their culture, ethnicity and identity. The novel delineates how globalization has been popularized for spread of capitalism and domination of superpowers, namely America and European countries. The migrants to America are seen struggling with the resultant problems of globalization and resisting them. They are often in the dilemma of choosing their own culture, and are also sometimes subject to impurity and adulteration. This chapter therefore discusses how the immigrants despite their resistance to Americanization and globalization are acculturated.
