Repression and Resistance in Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns

Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns (2013) explores the complexities of interpersonal bonds and the enduring impacts of conflict. It brilliantly interrogates the consequences of religious fanaticism and power mongering that fractures the base of human associations. Hosseini exhibits an ingenious knack of storytelling peculiar to the Afghan tradition which has a rich literary and cultural legacy. Hosseini employs his peculiar narrative technique to highlight the plight of Afghan women, which increased manifold during the Soviet invasion and the ensuing wars and civil wars. Through the story of Mariam and Leila, Hosseini not only demonstrates the suffering and endurance of Afghan women, but also uncovers the complexities of human relationships, especially the nuances of female friendship. The novel also underlines the impact of war and the role of the nation-state in promoting or suspending women’s rights. The present chapter explores various ways in which Khaled Hosseini has amplified the resistant voices of Afghan women who demonstrate exemplary courage and fortitude while encountering unfavourable circumstances. The chapter is divided into two sections: the first discusses the major thematic concerns of the novel, and  the second proceeds to elaborate the linguistic and literary devices employed by the novelist to heighten the effect. It details various issues that force the women of Afghanistan to live on the edges of society and obstruct them from realising their full potential.
