Exponentially increasing industries, urbanization, agriculture practices and anthropogenic activities generate huge amount of various types of waste. Heavy metals are one of the substantive components of the waste. Due to feeble waste management practices, these wastes are dumped onto the soil which not only causes the land filling but also contaminates the various components of the environment, especially soil, air and water. This accumulated waste directly or indirectly deteriorates the quality of soil, so it becomes the major concern to manage these wastes through scientific and eco-friendly technique. Nature had already gifted us the environmentally preferred bioengineers, the earthworms, which help us to alienate various soil pollutants. Earthworms have the ability to bioaccumulate various type of soil pollutants in their body. Different species of earthworms have the specificity and capacity to accumulate and regulate various types of soil pollutants in their body. Due to their bioaccumulating ability and wide range of distribution, they become the most preferred creature to remove different types of soil pollutants. Also they are proven to be good biological indicator of soil quality. They not only remove the soil pollutants but also improve the soil physical, chemical and biological properties. Earthworm’s high reproduction rate, wide range distribution, adaptation to different environmental conditions and bioaccumulation ability render this creature as bioengineer to alienate soil pollutants.

摘要
