Exploration of Mural Creation in Eastern Zhejiang Art Mural Villages

  • Bai-Hui Du

摘要

This study focuses on the creation of fishermen’s murals in Eastern Zhejiang’s “Art mural villages” drawing on experiences from South Korea’s “Mural villages” and Taiwan’s “Painted mural villages”. It explores combining community development with public art. Targeting common fishermen’s murals, the research uses surveys to understand community residents’ perceptions and preferences, offering mural creation suggestions to promote local economic development. Eastern Zhejiang fishermen’s paintings, an intangible cultural heritage, showcase traditional maritime culture with bold colors and delicate brushwork. Depicting fishermen’s daily lives, ocean scenes, deity worship, and myths, these paintings highlight the fishing culture’s importance. The study conducts cognitive research through instinct, behavior, and reflection levels to identify audience preferences, aiding artists in planning murals more effectively. Methods include case studies, MDS and Multidimensional Scaling Analysis. Cognitive content was classified into nine categories based on instinctive, behavioral, and reflective levels to explore audience interpretation. Results indicate that themes such as p1(Crab God), p3(Emergency Repair), p4(Big Net Head), p5(Zhoushan Hairtail, and p9(Basket Pants) excel in visual appeal and emotional resonance. While fishing culture themes are popular, overly modern themes should be avoided. Recommendations for creators include emphasizing visual elements, incorporating marine culture, delicate styles, and integrating local history to enhance emotional resonance and cultural heritage, strengthening community cohesion.
