A Study About Visual Movement of Applying Proximity of Gestalt Psychology on Straight Line

Lines generated by the movement between two Points guide the overall visual direction, thereby producing Visual Movement. Through Aesthetic Principles and Gestalt Psychology, it has been discovered that “Straight Line” can perfectly express rhythmic composition. Furthermore, the relationship between rhythmic composition and Visual Movement is closely intertwined, as different formations can generate Visual Movement. The rhythmic compositions related to Straight Lines include Length, Thickness, Density, and Radiation. Among these, the condition for generating rhythm is “Distance”, and a certain quantity of repetition is required. To examine the importance of Length, Thickness, and Distance on the impact of Visual Movement, this study conducted Quantitative Analysis through experimental design. Experiment tasks were designed using Paired Comparison Methods to identify how images formed by Straight Lines might generate Visual Movement. The results reveal that 1. Density and Length both influence Visual Movement, with Density showing a higher significance level, thus confirming Distance as the primary factor. 2. Thickness is not the primary factor affecting Visual Movement of Straight Lines, but in specific contexts where it interacts with Density and Length, it still has some degree of influence. 3. There are interactions and multiplicative effects between Density and Length; as Straight Lines become longer and denser, the sense of Visual Movement becomes stronger. The concept of Visual Movement is bound to appear in any pictorial object. The study aims to understand which elements in the composition of straight lines enhance their sense of movement. As a foundational theory for future Visual Movement.
