Research Ethics in Public Health

This chapter delves into the ethical considerations that researchers encounter when developing and implementing studies in the public health domain. The adherence to ethical procedures governing research studies in health-related contexts typically involves addressing three key areas. Firstly, researchers must obtain ethical approval that encompasses all participating healthcare settings involved in the study. This ensures that the research is conducted in line with established ethical standards and regulations. Secondly, issues of informed consent become paramount. Researchers are obligated to obtain informed consent from participants or their guardians, a requirement emphasized by most healthcare settings and recommended by various health departments and relevant scientific organizations. Adhering to ethical standards, such as those outlined by entities like the Medical Research Council, British Psychological Society, and National Children Bureau, is crucial in this regard. Lastly, researchers must adopt appropriate strategies to safeguard and maintain the privacy and anonymity of study participants. This involves addressing issues related to unequal power dynamics and implementing measures to prevent any potential harm to the participants throughout the research process.
