Research Ethics in Journalism

Releasing information within the possession of journalists is a professional duty, central to which is freedom of expression. However, these principles often conflict with the research ethics framework within universities, posing challenges for journalism researchers. Unlike journalism ethics, research ethics in journalism has received limited attention. This paper illuminates how journalism researchers uphold ethical practices in their work, focusing on academia and researchers in Bangladesh. While some public and private universities in Bangladesh have ethical review boards, many public institutions lack such oversight. The existence and procedural roles of IRBs in Bangladesh, specifically for approving journalism research, are explored. The implications of this chapter underscore the necessity of robust ethical frameworks in journalism research to maintain professional standards and safeguard participants' rights.
