Research Ethics in Development Studies

All researchers are passionate about their work, but it's crucial to keep in mind that research involves people, especially when it comes to development studies. Researchers who use human subjects must make sure that these subjects are treated ethically. The respondents' privacy and anonymity, as well as the confidentiality of any personal information, must be protected when dealing with these persons. Therefore, this chapter aims to describe the role of institutional review boards and researchers' responsibilities to participants and communities, particularly those from disadvantaged populations. This chapter also addresses cultural sensitivity issues, such as how to plan for primary data collection and fieldwork while considering regional norms, regional behavior, regional religious beliefs and values, regional sexual orientation and gender roles, regional age and ethnicity, regional disability, and other regional social distinctions like class. Researchers conducting development studies must be committed to acting ethically and responsibly towards the people and communities they are studying to guarantee that the highest standards of scientific and ethical practice are kept during data collection and fieldwork. This study discusses research ethics in development studies based on document analysis as well as practical experience from the authors’ research work.
