Quantification of the Replenishment Effects of Artificial Recharge Measures on Shallow Aquifers and Strategies for Restoring Future Groundwater Resources: A Case Study in Manjeshwar Watershed of Kerala, India

This study employs the groundwater flow model ‘Visual MODFLOW’ to quantitatively assess the impact of artificial recharge structures, constructed by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Trivandrum. The results indicate that, over a span of two years, the recharge structures have led to a maximum water level rise of 10 cm and a minimum rise of 2 cm at various locations within the micro-watershed. Although the increase in water level may appear modest, considering the extent of their influence, it is presumed that a significant volume of water has been recharged into the shallow aquifer. The study also identifies new potential sites and recommends suitable types of recharge structures for further groundwater restoration and development. In accordance with the guidelines presented by the Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development (IMSD) and the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), construction of check dams is proposed to enhance the groundwater resiliency of the Manjeshwar watershed.
