Status of Irrigation System at South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal, India and its Improvement Measures

To meet up the needs of increasing population culturable command area all over the world has also been increased in last few decades. To improve the status of irrigation system in South 24 Pargana which is the second highest populated district of West Bengal, it is seen that different kinds of irrigation methods are applied at study area like surface, mist irrigation, intrasoil, subirrigation, and sprinkling. Due to high population density in this district, the groundwater is stressed. Bay of Bengal water encroaches in aquifer. Both surface and subsurface water are saline. The salinity also increases after Aila has taken place. Based on the in situ field data, it has been found that water from Budge Budge-II, Jaynagar-I, Canning-II, Mathurapur-I, Mandirbazar, and Patharpratima are best suited for irrigation. Irrigation water can be applied after leaching at Bishnupur-I, Bhangar. Water from Maheshtala, Bishnupur-II, BudgeBudge-I, Sonarpur, Joynagar-II, Baruipur, Bhangar-II, Diamond Harbour-I and II, Magrahat-II, Canning-I, Basanti, Gosaba-I, Kulpi, Kultali, Kakdwip, Namkhana, Sagar, from Falta and Magrahat-I are unsuitable for irrigation. Preventive measures are to be taken at the soil, canal, etc. It is necessary to repair the gates of the diversion head work. It is also necessary to level the irrigation field. It is required to provide mixed cropping, provision of bio-drainage system, pipe line irrigation system to avoid water logging.
