Managing Agri-Biomass: Alternative Approaches to Improve Environmental Sustainability Through Resource Recovery

India is an economically advancing and highly industrialized country with intensive energy consumption. Annually, 563.6 Mtons of biomass are generated; of which, 189.1 Mtons are burned. As concerns grow over the environmental impact of biomass burning and the rising electricity demand, there is a growing emphasis on exploring sustainable resource recovery alternatives to address this concern. This book chapter aims to create an eco-friendly approach to biomass burning by generating resource recovery products. Biomass has a high organic content, making it a promising biogas and bioethanol production source. The resulting biogas and bioethanol can serve as fuel, be transformed into electricity, or be enhanced into biogas for various applications. The findings revealed that biogas and bioethanol production from biomass are efficient methods for handling crop residue to enhance environmental sustainability and generate income from resource recovery products. Despite the promise of lignocellulosic biomass as a readily available and cost-effective feedstock, large-scale commercial bioethanol production from these sources has yet to materialize in India. To optimize bioethanol generation processes, evaluating the utilization of various feedstocks, including those rich in sucrose, starch, and lignocellulosic biomass, is crucial to exploring alternative approaches to managing biomass.
