Dalian: A Major Sub-provincial Port City with Multi-functional Urban Development

Northeastern China’s thriving metropolis Dalian offers an intriguing fusion of modern energy and historical richness (Sun, 2008). This city, which is on the Liaodong Peninsula, is ideally situated to facilitate trade and economic exchanges internationally due to its location along the Bohai Sea (Lin & Wang, 2024). Dalian’s history begins with its founding as a Russian port in the late 1800s (Hess, 2011). The deep-water harbor’s strategic significance, which drew substantial foreign interest and investment, propelled the city’s early development (Hess, 2012). Dalian was referred to as “Dalny” during this time, a name that indicates its early Russian influence. Under Russian rule, the city’s infrastructure was developed, setting the stage for further expansion.
