摘要

China’s modern history is one of dramatic change, with centuries-old customs colliding with growing urbanization and technological advancement (Grant, 2017; Shan, 2023; Wong et al., 2018). The plan that directs this change is both ambitious and intricate, showcasing China’s distinct strategy for addressing the opportunities and problems presented by contemporary urban development (Tuan & Ng, 2004). The nation keeps redefining its cities as the twenty-first century goes on, striking a balance between the needs of an expanding economy and a fast-growing population and the preservation of its rich cultural legacy (Jiao, 2017; Naughton, 2007). The reader is introduced to the complex dynamics driving China’s urban revolution in this chapter, which also provides insights into how the country has changed its urban environments while maintaining strong ties to its past.
