As treatment options have improved, HIV has become a chronic disease and patients are enjoying an increased life expectancy. All treatments come with potential side effects and, for some, the long-term and cumulative drug exposure increases the likelihood of experiencing unwanted side effects from highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Protease Inhibitors (PI) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) have been linked to the development of lipodystrophy. When it occurs as part of the lipodystrophy syndrome facial atrophy can be stigmatizing and can cause social embarrassment and isolation. More concerning is that it can lead to decreased adherence to the prescribed therapeutic regimen [1, 2].

摘要
