Probiotics and Prebiotics as Dietary Medicine

Interest in functional foods containing probiotic bacteria or prebiotics by consumers has been increasing. Probiotics and prebiotics enhance colonizing microbiota, normalize the gastrointestinal function, strengthen the immune responses against infections, and improve autoimmune diseases and allergies toward human health. Prebiotics as food compounds that enhance beneficial gut microbes and the persistence of probiotic. Furthermore, the using probiotics prohibits pathogenic bacteria and their metabolites, reduces drug-resistant bacteria, controls blood cholesterol and pressure, and prevents cancerous conditions. Since probiotics contribute to the host’s health, the interest in both scientific research and commercial uses is increasing. Traditional medicines can only relieve some diseases related to the microbiota of gut. Various clinical studies and evidences have proved that prebiotics and probiotics can prohibit diseases, but they are consider as dietary ingredients more than medicines. Although probiotics and prebiotics may be regarded as the future generation of medicine to control disease, more evidence that is scientific is needed on the benefits of prebiotics and probiotics on health complications.
