Obesity is a major public health concern worldwide, which has been increasing at exponential rates over the last decades. In the recent era, conventional drugs, such as orlistat, used to treat obesity present significant side effects such as, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal discomfort on patients, leading the scientific community across the world to find alternative compounds or develop new treatment approaches with no adverse effects. Food bioactives are natural products used as basic nutritional constituents and for their beneficial health effects which include polyunsaturated fatty acids, bioactive peptides, polysaccharides, carotenoids, polyphenolics, vitamins, microminerals, probiotics, phytosterols, and fibers. The consumption of these natural functional foods, have been linked to the reduction of the incidence and progression of obesity in animal models and in clinical trials. These food bioactives have anti-obesity activity through mechanisms that include reducing energy intake, lipid synthesis and promote lipolysis by affecting lipase activity. In addition, these compounds regulate genes and pathways related to lipid synthesis and catabolism, and modulate advanced glycation end product accumulation, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway, inflammation, free radical scavenging and immunomodulatory effects. This chapter examines in details food bioactives for effective prevention and clinical management of obesity.
