Functional foods (FF) provide health promotion and benefits beyond their basic nutritive effects. FF contain biologically active compounds that have been used in traditional medicine including the prevention and clinical management of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Furthermore, food is the most commonly used as effective biological products as it improves the normal physiological processes, compensates energy, development and growth as well as resolving cardiovascular pathological conditions or alleviating their symptoms. The potential effects of FF in both prevention and management of CDVs have gained high interest in the recent past. This chapter gives an overview of functional food with beneficial effects against CVD. It highlights the key role of FF in the neuroendocrine regulation of the cardiovascular system, the recent insights, applications, future challenges and perspectives about FF network in the health caring system.
