This chapter examines the arduous journey and experiences of Sub-Saharan African migrants stranded in Morocco, who are caught in the complex interplay of aspirations for a better life and the harsh realities of migration policies. As Morocco transitions from a country of emigration to a transit and destination country, these migrants find themselves in a liminal space, navigating perilous routes and facing formidable barriers imposed by the European Union’s externalised border management. Through detailed life story interviews with 36 migrants, this study delves into the personal narratives that illuminate the multifaceted dimensions of migration, challenging the simplified dichotomy of voluntary versus forced migration. It uncovers the harsh experiences of dispossession, conflict and abuse that migrants endure, along with the socioeconomic pressures that drive their journey. Furthermore, it explores the challenges of local integration in Morocco, where migrants face precarious work conditions, systemic racism and the constant allure of crossing to Europe. This chapter contributes to the discourse on migration by highlighting the nuanced realities of South–South migration, urging a re-evaluation of policies to address the humanitarian needs of migrants who exist in the shadowy margins of legal definitions and protections.
