Concluding Remarks: Wing Structure Involved in Multiple Functions

Various lepidopteran wings perform various functions that are significant for lepidopteran life. In the previous chapters, the following functions of the adult wing with scales were addressed: airflow regulation, behavioral signal sending, sex pheromone secretion, sensory signal reception, unwettability, and antireflection. Some of these functions are coordinated in the lepidopteran wing and are effectively performed. This chapter describes how multiple functions are coordinated in the lepidopteran wing and how the coordinated functions contribute to effective behavioral performance.
