A Literature Review on Targeted Poverty Alleviation and Social Work

Combating poverty has always been a focal point for both the government and society in China. Especially since the reform and opening-up, China’s poverty alleviation efforts have achieved globally recognized success. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has placed great emphasis on China’s poverty alleviation work, positioning it prominently in the governance of the country. As China approaches the completion of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, poverty alleviation has entered a critical phase. Social work, originating from the charitable practice of helping others, plays a pivotal role in aiding the impoverished. This chapter will review the development of poverty alleviation in China, the development and positioning of social work in poverty alleviation, and explore the difficulties and challenges faced by the deeply impoverished population during the crucial period of decisive victory in poverty alleviation, as well as the positioning and service characteristics of social work when intervening with high-risk service populations.
