This chapter brings into question the role that institutions of higher education in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states play in promoting sustainable development (SD). The chapter discusses the challenges and issues associated with higher education and sustainable development in the region, arguing that any realistic approach to sustainability will have to provide contextualised solutions that reflect the local realities of the GCC countries, and at the same time take into account the dynamics surrounding these challenges. Underlying the present chapter is the argument that, across institutions of higher education, the promotion of sustainability has so far been limited to activities, interventions, and general strategy, but no specific focused policies have been put into place, and there are further major problems. Currently, there is no proper evaluation of the impact of higher education institutions on sustainable development, not only in Qatar and the GCC, but across the world as well.
