This chapter discusses the geopolitical historical context of the rise of ruling families in Kuwait and Qatar, with emphasis on political, geographic and economic factors. To start with, the present-day territories of Qatar and Kuwait were presumed to be scarcely populated by the ancestors of today’s inhabitants until the second half of seventeenth century.
