Control of Inclusions in the Molten Steel Through Lining Refractory Optimization

The molten steel is always within a vessel with the lining refractory so that the lining refractory certainly has an influence on the composition of inclusions in the molten steel. In the current chapter, the dissolution mechanism of the lining refractory into the molten slag was proposed and discussed. Reactions between the molten steel and the lining refractory were reviewed, including the dissolution of lining refractory into molten slag, the penetration of the molten steel into the refractory, and the corrosion of the lining refractory by the molten steel. The Marangoni effect on the corrosion of lining refractories at the interface was investigated, which was accompanied by high velocities, leading to a sharp increase in the mass transfer between relevant phases or interfaces.
