Natural Product-Based Treatment of Ear Infection

Otitis media (OM) has a complex anatomy and numerous presentations in children worldwide, especially in developing countries. A rising number of alternative treatments apart from antibiotics can be offered, taking into consideration their toxicity and adverse effects on human health. Several Indian traditional plants are reported with ethnopharmacological properties and have served as a valuable source of secondary metabolites for decades. This chapter focuses on the rate of prevalence of OM in developing countries, risk factors, complications, and the treatments that rely on OM. The adverse effects of antibiotic therapy and possible therapeutics of natural compounds are also discussed. Significantly, the promising novel alternative for antibiotic treatment using Indian medicinal plant parts with computational tools is the major corner of this chapter. Moreover, using computational techniques like artificial intelligence, molecular docking, and molecular dynamic simulation, the noteworthy advancements in biotechnology for comprehending the pharmacological roles of phytocompounds and developing a roadmap for drug design and development are also covered. The overview of this chapter is the computational research development toward drug development with Indian medicinal plants, moving from static methods to a range of advanced machine learning to confront OM.
