Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi), a widely used spice and medicinal herb, has gained significant attention for its therapeutic properties and agronomic potential. Recent advances in breeding have opened new avenues for enhancing its health benefits and crop productivity. This chapter delves into the latest research and developments and potential genetic and genomic breakthroughs that promise to revolutionize its cultivation and utilization. The genetic diversity of ajwain, traditionally underutilized, is now being explored to develop superior cultivars with enhanced traits. Advances in molecular breeding have facilitated the identification of key genes responsible for desirable attributes such as disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and improved yield. Genomic tools, such as quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, have further elucidated the complex genetic architecture of these traits, enabling precision breeding strategies. Breeding programs are now leveraging these insights to develop ajwain varieties with optimized phytochemical profiles, particularly focusing on its bioactive compounds like thymol and carvacrol. These compounds are renowned for their antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making ajwain a potent candidate for nutraceuticals and functional foods.
