Non-contact Height Measurement in 2D with the Pose of 45° Side Standing

This article introduces a novel non-contact method for measuring height in a two-dimensional (2D) space, utilizing a standing position tilted 45° to one side. Traditional height measurement techniques often necessitate direct physical contact, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Additionally, although a number of non-contact height measurement methods exist today that can be effective, they usually depend on images of subjects standing upright or perpendicular to the camera, thereby limiting their versatility and accuracy in various situations. Our method leverages 2D images to accurately estimate an individual’s height without physical interaction by analyzing images of subjects standing at a 45° angle to the camera. We have developed a height estimation algorithm based on key reference points, reference objects, and body proportions. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this method, with a low average error of about 1.3%, demonstrating high accuracy and consistency compared to conventional height measurement methods. This technique has potential applications in various fields, including health care, security, and ergonomic design.
