The general nomenclature of nuclear reaction is introduced and a classification of the main types of reactions is presented. The energetics of fission reactions is discussed on the basis of the liquid drop model. The range in mass number where spontaneous fission is possible is derived. The last part of the chapter focuses on fusion reactions. The main reactions and their relative merits are discussed.
