The chart of radionuclides is introduced. The liquid drop model is discussed and it is shown how to reproduce the main characteristics of the radionuclide chart. The equations describing multiple radioactive decays are discussed and the concept of secular equilibrium is introduced. The energetics of alpha and beta decays is discussed. The final part of the chapter is devoted to the illustration of natural radioactivity. A mention to the radioactive dating techniques is also provided. The radiometric units are also introduced and some notion of the effect of radioactivity on human health is provided.
