Carotid Artery Interventions

Extracranial carotid artery stenosis is a leading cause of stroke accounting for 25% cases of ischaemic stroke. Carotid artery interventions in form of either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) reduces risk of stroke in patients having significant stenosis of internal carotid artery. With the advent of newer hardware and technique optimization, CAS has become a safer alternative to surgical revascularization (CEA). This chapter highlights the role of imaging in carotid artery stenosis, criteria for patient selection and technique of carotid artery stenting.
