Preservation of Microorganisms

Microorganisms are very important for metabolite production. More so, given the microbial diversity and each strain being highly specific. To achieve this, it is important to preserve the best genome sequence for maximum yield of the metabolite. For research work and various projects, the microorganisms need preservation in the viable form. Starting from the isolation and growing the pure isolate strains, the preservation should be done in such a way that does not change the morphological, physiological, and genetic characteristic of the culture strain. This chapter covers the different methods of preservation of microorganisms. The preservation through cryopreservation and lyophilization has been explained. The importance of culture collection centers has been covered in this book.
