Screening of Industrially Important Microorganisms

Screening of microorganisms are very important for the strains that are to be used by the industries. The industries undertake a process that gives high yields of the product along with good quality and long shelf life storage. For this purpose, a high-yielding microbial strain has to be selected. Therefore, the strains of microorganisms that can produce the metabolite of interest should be screened to select the best strain. For basic screening of the culture strain, various techniques are available, as explained in this chapter. The best strain is then selected and is taken for scaling up and production process by the industry. Basically, the screening is done by classical methods, which is usually by enriching the culture medium. The strain can also be improved by classical mutagenesis. This chapter deals with the isolation, screening, and improvement of the industrially important microorganisms by classical, molecular engineering methods and also by modulating the metabolic pathway.
