In 2020, an update on the definition of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed. It was suggested that the definition should be based on the presence of metabolic dysfunction, and emphasize the coexistence of MAFLD with other liver diseases [1].
