Nationalism in the Gandhi Age
摘要
It is quite impossible to bypass the role and contributions of Mahatma GandhiGandhi, M.K., especially while discussing the development of Tagore’s notion of nationalism. Besides the influence of immediate circumstances, the question of Swaraj/Nationalism was the question of ethicsEthics and aestheticsAesthetics for both of them. Gandhi’sGandhi, M.K. coming to India after a long sojourn in South Africa and his introduction of Pan-India non-violent mass movement mark a departure from the erstwhile idea and practices of nationalism in India, which has earned him the title of the ‘father’ of Indian mass nationalism. Thus, it is customary among the scholars to associate GandhiGandhi, M.K. primarily with Indian nationalism. However, such a characterisation is also not free from problems.
