Ten-Thousand-Yuán Households: Economic Changes and Policy Choices

The emergence of “ten-thousand-yuán households” was the result of rural economic and social development changes; the affirmation and support of government policies created a brilliant image that combined the essence of the times. With the promotion of the media, “ten-thousand-yuán households” became megaphones for farmers’ wealth, and the concept spread to thousands of households. This chapter reviews the history of “ten-thousand-yuán households” from their emergence to their decline, showing the trajectory of rural economic and social transformation and development, revealing policy choices under economic system changes, understanding the true connotation of key words of the times from the context of social historical development, and examining economic changes in contemporary rural China.
