Any biota on the planet Earth needs to be conserved following in situ and ex situ conservation methods. In the current scenario, in situ conservation is challenged by the impacts of climate change and global warming. Thus, it is essential to design ex situ conservation schemes that reserve the unique flora and fauna for future generations to effect sustainable use and sharing. Being an important and successful method of ex situ scheme, cryopreservation is primarily used for the long-term storage of gametes for both plants and animals. It is widely used and standardized in animal gametes but is least known for macroalgal resources. Emphasizing the economic value and livelihood opportunities offered by seaweeds, necessary research to be initiated in all aspects. A scan through the current literature resulted in about 34 relevant studies on 33 species of germplasm preservation of seaweeds. India holds a diversity of 94 commercial seaweed species, but only less than 10 species are covered in the scientific literature. The cryopreservation of the seaweed germplasm includes the collection of species, identification of cryoprotectants, packaging of germplasm samples, cooling of germplasm, thawing, and viability assays for the post-thaw samples; this process varies according to the species, which is used. In this communication, we provide an overview of the methods of cryopreservation of seaweeds and the datasets from previous studies. A conclusion is also provided to suggest future research directions in ex situ germplasm conservation.
