Operator algebras since their origin have had deep connections with dynamical systems and ergodic theory. Structure theory of von Neumann algebras and \(C^*\) -algebras suggests that the orbit structure of the underlying dynamical systems strongly reflects the algebraic structure of the associated operator algebras.
