This chapter follows a similar pattern to Chap.  11 , describing acoustic design principles for hospital wards. Once again, criteria and recommendations for background sound levels, intruding sound, reverberation and speech intelligibility are discussed, in this case including the potential for sleep disturbance. Measured values of acoustic parameters are reported, and the results of a number of interventions are discussed in detail. Once again, the chapter concludes with a summary of best practice for the acoustic design of these spaces.
