Socially Just Pedagogies and Practices in Health Professions Education: Implications for Faculty Development
摘要
This chapter positions social justice as a fundamental premise or worldview that should serve as a golden thread throughout the field of education, including health professions education. If health professions education is to take seriously the calls for adopting socially just pedagogies and practices in the training of future healthcare professionals, then those responsible for faculty development will need to re-imagine how they can enable the sort of change that will be needed in response. After problematizing social justice as a complex construct, and engaging with some of the key debates around it, the chapter moves on to consider a role for faculty development within these debates. It describes approaches to faculty development that have the potential to enable socially just teaching while at the same time calling for a stronger advocacy role in this regard—one that includes a responsibility to effect meaningful change across our institutions.
