  • Udaya Muthyala

摘要

Understanding intercultural communication is essential in today’s interconnected world. It involves being aware of our cultural perspectives, actively listening to others, showing empathy, and adapting to different cultural norms and practices. This chapter explores how intercultural communication influences the cognitive development of bilingual and multilingual children. It emphasizes the significance of language skills and understanding behavioral norms in diverse cultures. The chapter also highlights the importance of non-verbal communication in intercultural interactions, stressing the need for intercultural competence for meaningful and effective communication. Research demonstrates that intercultural communication is critical in developing linguistic and cognitive skills in bilingual and multilingual individuals. However, it also acknowledges that adults often face challenges in these interactions due to limited exposure to diverse cultural backgrounds. This exploration provides insights into the development of intercultural competence and its impact on cognitive development, especially in children exposed to different linguistic and cultural contexts.
