Since his admission to Peking Normal University (now Beijing Normal University, BNU) in 1949, Professor Gu Mingyuan has closely linked himself to higher education. He was sent to study in the Department of Education of Soviet State Moscow Lenin Teachers College (now Moscow State Pedagogical University) in 1951 and returned to China in 1956 to teach in the Department of Education of BNU. In 1965, he was appointed Deputy Dean of the Department of Education of BNU and Deputy Director of Institute of Foreign Studies. In 1984, he was appointed Vice President of BNU, Dean of University of Education and Management of BNU, and Dean of Graduate University of BNU, and in 2001, he was appointed Deputy Director of University Committee of BNU. For 70 years, he has been carrying out academic research and university management practice at university and has a deep practical understanding of university and higher education.
