Professor Gu Mingyuan believes that the key to educational development and improvement lies in teachers. He pointed out that no matter how clear the education policy is, no matter how ideal the curriculum standards are, and no matter how good the teaching materials are, the quality of education is still difficult to guarantee if the level of teachers is not up to standard, or teachers lack of enthusiasm for education reform. Therefore, it is urgent to reform teacher education and improve teachers’ competency. In 2015, Gu further explained the connotation of General Secretary Xi Jinping on good teachers, pointing out that “a good teacher should be both a Ren Shi (人师: teacher for people) and a Jing Shi (经师: teacher for knowledge)” (2015a, p. 8). Whether it is a Ren Shi or Jing Shi, its core is professionalization. Ren Shi should have professional ethics, ideal beliefs, noble moral sentiments, and a heart of benevolent. To be a Jing Shi should have solid professional knowledge and ability, know how to follow the law of youth development and the law of education, and use the most effective methods to impart knowledge to students.
