Online Assessment Security Through Computer Lockdown and Human Proctor Methods

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated technology development, prompting the adoption of internet applications for various social activities, including education. This shift to online education, initially pandemic-driven, has become a significant milestone, particularly in higher education. Reputable universities offer online courses through Learning Management Systems (LMS), providing flexibility and accessibility. However, online assessment poses challenges in ensuring security and preventing Academic Dishonesty, prevalent due to increased internet usage. Proctoring and computer lockdown techniques are vital to secure online assessments. This study aims to develop a systematic procedure for secure online examinations, focusing on XYZ University in Indonesia, specifically the administration of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The proposed process will be evaluated through simulations to assess its effectiveness, with the combination of proctoring and computer lockdown. This approach has demonstrated its effectiveness, as evidenced by the average 37% rise in participant numbers from 2020 to 2023. However, it also faced challenges with suspected fraud incidents contributing to 56% of cases involving academic dishonesty, due to unauthorized remote access to participant devices.
