The regionKatyuris \i KumaunEarly medieval \i and GarhwalHimalaya \i, comprising the present-day state of UttarakhandUttarakhand \i constituted a single politico-cultural region during the rule of the KatyurisKatyuris \i. The Katyuris are regarded to be the first historical dynasty to rule over a unified Kumaun-Garhwal. Though much has been written on the history of Uttarakhand after the fifteenth century, enough justice has not been given to the Katyuri dynasty. The early medieval history of Uttarakhand faces challenges due to scarcity of historical records, especially prior to the eighth century. Therefore, the latter half of the seventh century, marked by the rise of the Katyuri dynasty holds significance in Uttarakhand’s history as we get many epigraphicalEpigraphicalsources \i sources for their rule. Katyuris must be given the sole credit of being the only empire to rule Uttarakhand as a unified region. They not only brought political unification but also gave impetus to cultural renaissance. Their rule was marked by many achievements like the revival of the VedicVedic cultureCulture \i, rise of art and architecture in the form of temple building. Hence the main aim of the paper is to explore the political, social and cultural facets of Katyuri rule on the basis of inscriptions. It also delves into their administrative system, religious beliefs and architectural developments.
