The KadambKadambs \i dynasty has been in power along the west coast of India since the fourth century CE. Although they originated in the hinterlands of KarnatakaKarnataka \i they established themselves in Banvasi which was an important town since the ancient times. They later branched out and controlled the regions like GoaGoa \i and Hangal. Some also controlled Bankapur, Belur Bayalnad, etc. The rulers contributed immensely in the socio-religious and cultural sphere. The regions saw enormous development in art and architecture especially in temple building. The use of indigenous building materials saw encouragement of local artisans. Temples became epicentres of Indian cultureCulture \i. On the administrative front the records of Goa KadambsKadambs \i highlight the organizational structure during the eleventh century. They indicate high degree of sovereignty which was infallible. They also had an excellent control over the Arabian waters and the period saw no foreign invaders coming through sea. The ascendency over sea was due to their well developed navyNavy which had the state of art of defense. The defense system also included broad sturdy fortifications protecting the land. Enforced with palisades and gates these defense mechanisms played a vital role. The economic aspect of the period is exhibited through the copperplates of eleventh century and the development of port towns which traded with important commodities linking the west coasts with other countries. The dynasty also showed allegiance to Bhaaratdesh.
