Consensus Modeling to Manage Conflict Risk Mitigation

Globalization and intense competition are increasingly prompting companies to establish production sites in geographically distant countries and regions with low-cost advantages. However, such outsourcing usually leads to the growing complexity of production site selection and the ever-growing probability of raising risks to a higher level. The choice of production sites is extremely important for designing a manufacturer-centered supply chain network. Such selection decision-making typically involves multiple decision makers (DMs). Different individual perceptions and subjective factors are likely to result in differences in opinion, or even conflict risk, which may ultimately become a challenge in obtaining a highly acceptable solution. This chapter develops a two-stage group decision support approach based on consensus modeling for the risk assessment of global production site selection. In the first stage, the multi-attribute decision-making technology is adopted to implement the preselection of alternatives guided by commerce criteria. In the second stage, the risk assessment based on failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) method is performed. Following the FMEA assessment information, the consensus reaching process is introduced to reduce the conflict risk in the individual evaluation information. Finally, the comparative analysis and discussion verify features and advantages of the proposed approach.
