Mechanomyography Analysis of Respiratory Muscle Function While Singing in Spinal Cord Injury

Respiratory muscle training (RMT) has evolved significantly from its early origins, incorporating advanced techniques and devices to enhance muscle strength, endurance, and efficiency. Recently, singing therapy has emerged as a compelling alternative to conventional RMT, particularly for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). First recognized in the late twentieth century, singing therapy uses vocal exercises to improve respiratory function by engaging the diaphragm, intercostal, and accessory muscles in a dynamic and engaging manner. This approach has gained traction due to its ability to address specific respiratory challenges associated with SCI, such as impaired breath control and reduced lung capacity, resulting from disrupted neural pathways. Singing therapy enhances muscle performance through controlled breathing and sustained vocalization, which can strengthen respiratory muscles, improve cough function, and increase overall lung capacity. Unlike electromyography (EMG), which measures electrical activity, mechanomyography (MMG) captures the mechanical vibrations of muscle contractions, providing additional insights into muscle performance and fatigue. Integrating singing therapy into SCI rehabilitation programs offers a holistic and motivational complement to traditional RMT, contributing to improved respiratory health and quality of life for patients. By combining the benefits of vocal exercise with established training methods, singing therapy represents an innovative approach to respiratory care, enriching the scope of SCI rehabilitation and supporting comprehensive patient outcomes.
