Non-pharmacological Treatment Interventions in Management of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a unique degenerative condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, specifically focusing on sensory and autonomic axons initially, followed by a lesser impact on motor axons. DN has a remarkably high illness burden. Less than half of individuals experiencing neuropathic pain find relief through pharmacological interventions, leaving a considerable portion untreated or inadequately treated despite the availability of various pharmaceutical medications and management guidelines for chronic neuropathic pain. Therefore, there arises a need for novel therapeutic interventions that can be used either alone or in conjunction with existing treatments. It’s crucial to advance the development of innovative, last-resort interventional therapeutic treatments to provide relief for patients who remain unresponsive to conventional interventions. Non-pharmacological treatment interventions have been highly neglected but are quite effective in the management of diabetes peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This chapter highlights the non-pharmacological treatment interventions that may be proven to be beneficial in the management of DPN.
